The plants of the Corsican maquis: a short guide

It is said that sailors could recognise Corsica by its scent before they even saw its shores. That scent is the maquis. Here is what it is, and the five plants we use from it.

What is the maquis?

The maquis is a dense scrubland of evergreen shrubs, typical of Mediterranean regions. It covers much of Corsica, from the coast to the lower slopes of the mountains. Its plants withstand heat, summer drought and wind: many of them are highly aromatic.

A heritage to respect

The maquis is a fragile environment, especially in summer, when the risk of fire is high. If you walk in Corsica, stay on the paths, never light a fire and do not pick the plants without permission: many grow in protected areas.
